Consortium Agreement

The University of Maryland at College Park is a member of the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area. With the approval of the MBA Programs Office, students may enroll in certain classes (ELECTIVES ONLY) at other institutions and have their credits considered "residence" credits at their own institutions.   These courses are considered College Park credits for tuition and fee purposes(Maryland residency).  Grades are calculated into their GPA. Significant factors to be considered for approval of consortium course work are the lack of similar courses at Maryland, enhancement of the student’s overall program, and the level and content of the course.

Please note that MBA/MS students may attend only those consortium schools that are AACSB-accredited; qualified programs in the Washington area include American University, George Mason University, Georgetown University, George Washington University, and Howard University.

Grades for Consortium classes will be sent to the University of Maryland Registrar, recorded and calculated into the cumulative grade point average of the University of Maryland student and become a permanent part of the student’s official record. Auditing courses through the Consortium is not permitted. Courses that do not carry credit at the University of Maryland, but do receive credit at the host university, will not count for credit at the University of Maryland. Further, any courses that do not carry credit at the host university will not be given credit by UMCP.

When taking a Consortium course, University of Maryland students register at College Park and pay the University of Maryland tuition rate to the University of Maryland Bursar. No financial transactions take place directly between the student and host university.

Note: Tuition remissions awarded to graduate assistants and fellows may not be used to pay for consortium courses at other universities. Graduate assistants and fellows must pay for any courses they take under the consortium arrangement. Consortium courses will be included in the semester credit hour total for financial aid purposes.

Procedure for Registration, University of Maryland Students

Step One: Find a class to take. Evaluate other schools’ offerings and select a class from the catalog. (For links to course catalogs see below). Classes must be at a graduate level and must complement the student’s degree program.

Step Two: Contact the Consortium Coordinator at the institution to be visited to determine if the course is open to Consortium students and if there are any special conditions. (See list of contact names and phone numbers below).

Step Three: Submit the consortium request form/s to your campus administrator. Your request can then be reviewed for approval/denial for transfer into the MBA program. Note: When approving consortium course work, availability of similar classes at Maryland, enhancement of the student’s degree program, and the level and content of the course will be considered. Permission will not be granted if a comparable course is offered at UMCP.

Step Four: Be sure to check in at the Consortium Office of the host university (take your copy of the registration forms with you) prior to the first day of classes to confirm that your desired class is available and that you are properly registered.

Tuition: Please note that classes taken through the Consortium are considered College Park courses and are charged under College Park rates. This means that if you are not a Maryland resident, you will pay out-of-state tuition for any Consortium courses
